Moments in Time: Interactive Public Art

“Moments in Time” was honored as a winner in the Education, Art & Culture – Best Use of Data category at the 4th Annual Anthem Awards. This recognition, awarded by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, celebrates the innovative use of data in the realm of digital art and social good.

The project, an interactive public art installation, was initiated in 2020, coinciding with the construction of the Science Park Towers in Jönköping, Sweden. As the creator, I designed this real-time, evolving artwork to engage with the audience in a dynamic way, unfolding in five chapters that explore the interconnected themes of nature, data, seasons, technology, time, and people. By inviting the public to interact with the artwork, “Moments in Time” transforms public space into a living, breathing reflection of the world around us, offering a unique and immersive experience that highlights the intersection of technology, art, and human connection.

Collaborating with AndMurals AB and the towers’ architects, the concept aimed to seamlessly integrate a 45-square-meter LED screen into the architectural fabric. This singular canvas, boasting 65 million pixels and a cutting-edge computer system, serves as the foundation for a unique and captivating artistic experience.

Comprising five dynamically evolving chapters, ‘Moments in Time’ is designed to harmoniously coexist with the daily lives of Science Park Towers’ occupants, transforming the space into an innovative hub and a distinctive meeting place. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of Swedish nature, each chapter unfolds as a unique expression of art, challenging perceptions and providing a momentous experience.

Explore the intricacies of each chapter with a user-friendly interface, unveiling the technology’s name, the data API shaping the visual, and dynamic variables like wind speed and direction. Navigate through transitions with smooth breathing animations, offering a unique perspective on the essence of each chapter.

At the heart of the ‘Moments In Time’ concept is the creation of a living organism that transforms with the rhythm of day and night, people and seasons responding to the occupants’ interactions within the building. Beyond capturing fleeting moments in nature, ‘Moments in Time’ acts as a temporal canvas, fostering awareness of climate changes. Rooted in Swedish culture, the installation reflects the nation’s deep respect and integration with nature, encapsulating its vast landscapes, sparse population, lush greenery, and the extreme weather characteristic of climate change.

Experience the continuous impact of weather on people, from weeks of sun setting at noon to midnight, disrupting the delicate balance of daily life. ‘Moments In Time’ aims to unify the community, offering a blend of shared experiences, comfort, relaxation, and beauty within its artistic narrative.
